Much ado about mould

Bathroom mould is ghastly to live with and difficult to get rid of once it takes hold. A little like weeds in the garden, one tiny spot can suddenly spread and end up covering the ceiling and walls of your bathroom.

So how do you prevent it? Ventilation is one of the best methods to help prevent mould forming. In many bathrooms there is only a window and no exhaust. If this the case in your apartment, make sure you leave the window open and keep the door to the bathroom open during the day. This helps by allowing air to circulate in the apartment. If you notice condensation on the ceiling and walls try to dry it off. If you do happen to spot an area of mould clean it off straight away using a solution of bleach and water (go to: - http://ourhouse.ninemsn.com.au/ourhouse/factsheets/db/tips/07/756.asp).

High levels of condensation in your apartment may be due to other problems so if this is the case, you should contact your Managing Agent for further advice.

I moved into a place that had an existing mold problem. The landlord remediated before we moved in and now the mold is back. They are claiming it is our fault - we breathe too much and don’t open the windows enough. We have asked them to fix the problem and they said its our problem. What’s more, they implied that if we dont take care of it, they’ll most likely find more damage and take it out of our bond. What are our rights?
